Continuous Positive Airway Pressure (CPAP) Therapy
Types of Masks
Nasal Pillows (Small)
Nasal pillows seal around the base of the nares (nostrils) using soft cushions. These types of masks are held in place with a single strap which wraps around the head. This design is most popular amongst those who want a minimal amount of weight and material on their face.
Nasal Masks (Medium)
Nasal masks seal around your nose in the shape of a triangle and are held in place by two straps that wrap around your head. These types of masks do not cover your mouth. Nasal masks are the oldest and most commonly used mask for CPAP machines. Nasal masks may have gel or silicone seal and can vary greatly in comfort.
Full Face (Large)
Full face masks at a minimum seal around your nose AND mouth and in some instances they can cover the entire face. These masks are held in place by two straps that wrap around the head. These masks are required by patients who breathe through their mouth while they sleep. Alternatives for these types of patients include Nasal Masks or Nasal Pillows used in conjunction with a chin strap (a device which keep’s the patient’s mouth closed during the night).
Full face masks may also be required if:
- You have chronic sinusitis, making it impossible to breathe through your nose.
- You are congested from seasonal allergies or a cold.
- Your mouth drops open during sleep and using a chin strap has proven too uncomfortable or simply ineffective.
